Today I cleaned my wood burning stove chimney flue by using a 'pull through' - normally a term associated with cleaning gun barrels! Dropped a thin steel wire with a weight down the flue and pulled a wire brush through. For the past five years I've been banging the steel flue with a wooden mallet - end of winter about one 'tasla' of soot crumbles down. So I was wondering what would happen if I did a pull through. The result - about another 'tesla' of soot crumbled and fell down - remember that this pull through was done for the first time since the stove was installed 5 years ago. The other learning was (the stove flue goes up 3 doors) that the soot was mostly in the lower section of the chimney, closer to the stove. This is not to suggest that cleaning the chimney flue in 5 years is good enough! It's NOT. Please remember to take all precautions as you would with any wood/fire burning device.
